Overview:
Kobomoje Artist Residency invites artists to apply for a residency program with focus on Capturing Women’s Histories in Nigeria. Artists are encouraged to reflect on the multifaceted contributions of women to nation-building, social dynamics, globalization and modernization. Our aim is to critically engage with the past, present and future impact of women in Nigeria by amplifying their often overlooked voices, and challenge narratives that uphold patriarchal ideologies.
This thematic residency is inspired by the life and times of Suliat Adedeji (1944 - 1996), a woman activist, business mogul and prominent political figure in Nigeria. From the late 1970s to 1996, she triumphed as a political stalwart despite being female. Her interests span youth empowerment and grassroot engagement. Today, our residency program is nestled in her main residence, Kòbọmọjẹ́ court, where she lived until 1996.
Throughout history, women have made valuable contributions to their societies. While some are well known, others obscured, all of them have been trail blazers. We welcome artists to explore the role of women in artistic, social, economic and political development of Nigeria. Female artists are particularly encouraged to apply, and creative thinkers whose practice highlights the complexities of gender dynamics. All manners and approaches of art-making are welcome.
